I would have been really mad. I think I would have called the police. And would have explained to them what happened. And describe to them what they looked like and hope they would catch them. But in the meanwhile I would end up walking back to the house. But I think I would leave grandpa and tell him I'd be back.

I would have been like where do I go now? I would have been worried about the grandfather also because he is sick and it is a 10 mile walk back it would be very tiring and he could get even more sick. I also might not know the route back home.

I would first find water and food. Then I would try to get shelter. I would also try to get in contact with others so they could come pick us up. I would also take good care of Grandfather.

I think that If i was in Mattie's place, i would hopefully try and ease my grandfather or grandmother if they were feeling sick or ill. Then I would try and see which way is rural land and country and which way is urban land like cities and shopes. If I could not find either direction, I would help my grandfather along to the country area where I was turned down. Then I would try and use any sort of communication to reach someone like Dr. Kerr or Eliza to come and help us. I would have reacted calm on the outside but panicky on the inside. i know that i would feel rushed, aware that grandfather only has a certain amount of time until he becomes very, very sick, possibly with yellow fever.

If I were Mattie and I were kicked of a carriage even though I wasn't sick I would have been angry. The farmer took her food!!!! Who would do that to a little girl and her old weak grandfather? I guess fear sometimes can run peoples lives. All of their cloths were left with the farmer, his wife, and his newborn son. I just don't understand how anyone could do something like that. If I were Mattie I would have yelled at those gate guards so loud they went deaf. Those gate guards didn't even give them an escort home. Those people were mean

I would have followed the wagon into the nearest village even though grandpa wasn't feeling good. once in the village i would have snuck out at night and took some food. In the morning i would leave at the crack of dawn so nobody noticed us. Once out of the village i would head north to the cleaner air. If we find a village i would get grandpa settled and then go back to see lucia if she was still alive.

If I had a person who was very close to me who may or may not have Yellow Fever I would do a couple of things. First, I would find a big tree for the person to lay under and sleep while I figure things out. After the person was asleep, I would attempt to find water. If I found water, I would then try to catch fish by using one of those huge skirts the girls had to wear. (it might make a great fish net) After I caught fish, I would look for berries or some other fruit in case something happened to the fish. After I got back, I would start by making a fire to keep the person warm, and to cook the fish. After we ate, while the sick person went to sleep, I would look for a barn to ask for food and blankets to keep us warm. I would do this until the person got better.
When the person got better, I would catch and cook a lot of fish and start the long walk home. We would probably travel 5 miles the first day, and then stop to eat and sleep. Then we would do the other 5, and hope for the best when we finally were home.

It would be stressful because of her grandfather is sick, she isn't in the greatest shape, and they don't have any food. As Trista said you most likely wouldn't know the way home.

If I was Mattie I would be mad because I would be kicked off a carriage with no food or water in the middle of nowhere. Also, it would be when it was hot outside and there would not be much shade. I would also be frustrated because if grandfather did have Yellow Fever that the doctor who stoped them didn't help grandfather.

Michael, what if there wasn't a town for miles???? How would you get your grandfather if the nearest town was miles away???
Zach, same thing. If there wasn't a town for miles, then how would you find police???

If I was Mattie being kicked off the carriage i would of reacted by saying, Well my grandfather is not sick so why r u kicking us off this wagon. I would of reacted this way because he was not sick with yellow fever maybe a little cold, but that's it. Also if he wasn't sick and they kicked us off I would of been mad because i wouldn't of wanted to walk the rest of the way also we paid the money and we should get what we paid for. Well that's what i would do and think, but maybe if i was actually there in this situation and not just thinking about my answer would change.

I would move use to the river because so we can get water and food.To get the fish I would make a rock trap.An then use the petticoat to get the fish. Ever hour I will go to the path

If I was in Mattie's predicament I would not be very angry. I would have stayed were I was and and try to get my grandfather well and be thankful that I am this far away from town. if i did try to walk back I would risk getting sick and risk the life of my grandfather.I would stay put and try to build a small house and live of of berries and try to catch a rabbits. Wen the first couple frosts came around I would go back to town and see if it is safe if it is not I would gather up some more supplies and go back to the forest and try to find a country house to spend the winter.

If I was in in the middle of no where with no food or water I would be freaking out not knowing what to do and how to deal with it because I had to think abut my grandfather and I couldn't just walk all the way home. I would also be kind of scared because my grandfather wasn't feeling all the best. It's not like you could just tell an old man to get up were going to go walk all the way home ten miles let me remind you with no water. He would most likely die on the long journey.

I would be scared for my grandfather because if we did start going back and we stopped to take a rest and he fell asleep what would happen if he never woke back up again I would scream!

That is a good idea Gavin I thin that you should also make a bunny trap but if you only eat bunny's you can get rilly sick because they have a verry lean meet and you can dye because they have no fat so all you will be taking in is proten and that is not good fore your body

I would try to walk back to town or if i had to i would go around the village and start heading to the other town so i could see if they might think grandfather wasnt sick. Like it said in the book if it was a one day trip by wagon you could probably get there in 1 to 2 day walk. Since grand father was sick it would probably take a little bit longer we would have to stop more but i think we could make it.

    RE elyse
Matie knew for sure the closest village was about 10 miles away andthere had to be a village some what close cause where would the carriage be going it couldn't go for 30 miles. There had to be a village.

RE GAVIN IT IS A GOOD IDEA BUT HOW WOULD YOU MAKE THE TRAP? HOW WOULD YOU COOK THE ANIMAL? IT MIGHT BE BETTER TO GO INTO THE VILLAGE AND ASK FOR FOOD, MATCHES, AND CLOTHES. ALSO SOMEPLACE TO STAY WOULD BE NEEDED. TRY TO MAKE FRIENDS AND THEN ASK THEM TO HELP YOU FIND A PLACE TO STAY. TRY TO STAY CALM AND FIND FOOD.

Re: EVERYONE I think everyone's responses make sense but a lot of people are not thinking of Mattie's thoughts. You are supposed to be thinking of what Mattie would do. Put yourself in Mattie's shoes. Think of what you are about to say and ask yourself "Is that something Mattie would say?" For example Mattie wouldn't use words like "You stink" or sayings like we use today. This is 1793 and our world has changed A LOT since then. So think if Mattie would say what your typing and if it doesn't sound like she would, change it. Kind of like when we had to write a letter in Crash or Penn's perspective but this time, Think in Mattie's.
