If you had been in Mattie's predicament, kicked off of the carriage in the middle of nowhere, how would you have reacted?

I would do the same thing she did but drag grandpa to the stream right away so i could pour water on him and he could drink his fill. Mattie should of also made sure the water was clean before she drank it

I would have told the gaurds about the farmers' lie, or if I couldn't do that, I would at least yell at the farmer to let me have my clothes and food. If I couldn't get the gaurd to let us through, I would have them get my items for me. if all else fails I would cry to make them feel sorry for me, because many people pity children who cry.

Re; Claudia, I completely agree with you. I would have told the guards about the situation and insisted that they let them through. If that could not happen then I would have insisted that the farmer let Mattie have her clothes and her food back. The guards would listen to her. If I were traveling I would have brought the letter from the Luddingtons' saying that they could come and stay with them. Then, the guard would know that they didn't have Yellow Fever because they were staying with friends. This could have prevented what have happened on the carriage. Mattie's grandfather in my opinion could have pushed on the fact more that he was not sick and that they had been on the carriage for awhile and he fell asleep. Since, the grandpa was in the uniform he could have faked to be an army person and made up a story of how he was going to the Ludingtons' farm for a visit. But, if all of that failed then I would do what Claudia said and start crying and hope that they took pity on me because I was a child.

I would be feaked out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cause you have a granddad who is drowsy and has a cold, and you dont have water or food. Luckily mattie found some.. I don't know if I would've found the food but mattie knew the soldiers trick. I also would've tried convincing and telling the guards to let us in the place. Because her granddad just coughed because of the heat. If they dont let us in I would try to get another carriage to take us in while granddad is not coughing then maybe theyd let em in. Overall if they dont let me in Id be freaked out!!! (and worried)

If was in Mattie's position I would yell at and ask the farmer to give back the food and blankets or ask the guards to let me through. Because Mattie and grandpa did not have yellow eyes or skin they obviously did not have the fever. If that failed and they turned us away I would go to find water for Grandpa and myself. After we were rested I would start walking back or try to hitch a ride back to the house.

If I was in Mattie's predicament I would have first tried to find shelter. I would have probably tried to build a lean-to. I would have then looked for water and food. Also, by the river I would have tried to build some traps. I would have cooked the water over the fire. I would also try to gather some berries and clean them in the water. After the night I would have bundled up our food, check the traps, and gotten some fresh water from the stream. I would walk with my grandpa along the road. When it started to get dark again I would have stopped and built a fire. I would have tried to keep the fire as close to us as I could, because the smoke keeps away the insects away. I would keep doing this until I got back to my house. Then I would have a doctor look at my grandpa. Then I would have sent a letter to mom, and tried to find Eliza. I would have stayed in my house, except to get water and food, until the yellow fever stopped. I would then run the coffie shop until my mom got back.

If I were Mattie I would be so mad. First of all a paid driver has just kicked my grandfather and me of his rented wagon in the middle of no where and does it for his own selfishness to bring his family to safety. Second the driver has stolen all my food, clothing, and other essentials belonging to my grandfather and I. Also I would feel stuck because my grandfather is sick and we have nothing to eat or drink. Overall that is how I feel if I were Mattie.

I would have done the opposite Mattie did. I would have freaked out (like Saagar said) and I would have worried about my grandfather. I wouldn't have been as calm as Mattie to go out and calmly go get water and berries. I would also do what Saagar said again, I would try to go back in the village and try to make them let us in. If that didn't work I would get another carriage but try not to let grandfather cough a lot. Right when the farmers started to drive away I would have at least tried to get all of our food and our clothing back, I would have been shocked like Mattie was, but still would have tried to get it all back!!!

If I got kicked off the wagon I would have pushed my grandfather until he dropped down and fell asleep right there and then to get to the next town, to get food, water, and a place to sleep. I know I would be risking my grandfather and my life, but I would do anything to help our lives and make everything normal again. Even if I'm only one person, I could make it back home to my mother and Eliza with my grandfather. I would get over my sickness and not get anyone else sick. Grandfather and I would get over it together, quickly and with ease. Another thing I would do is to make sure I got better before I worried about anything else, and make sure I eat and drink enough water so nI don't get dehydrated.

I would be SUPER mad. I would be mad because its not my fault that my grandfather is coughing. If you don't see yellow in the eyes or skin they don't have yellow fever. And they don't know that the coughing would be yellow fever. Its bumby and dusty on wagons so you are going to cough. I would also at least ask for my money back and make sure that I did because if I didn't get what I paid them for why would I let them keep my money? Unless they would take me home then I would not ask for my money back because they would of tooken me somewhere. But since they kicked Maddie off I think they should of givien them some food and water so they would survive untill they got home. I think the people were just mean to kick them off even if the grandpa was coughing.

The wagon drove off with my Grandfather and I's bags and food so now we do not have any fresh clothes or food.I would probably ask my grandpa if I had enough money to get another wagon to drive us into my town. I would maybe stay at Nathaniel's house if I were Mattie.Unless his parents did not let us come in because of the fever.Nathaniel might sneak my grandpa and I into the house and let us stay there for a while till we could return home.If we could not do that I really would not know what to do.I would maybe have enough money in my little pouch I could find a small market (even if I had to walk a long ways) and buy some buns or some kind of food for us to eat. Then I would just have to camp out under a tree otherwise I really would not know what to do.

Re; Ian, I disagree with some of your ideas on how to stay alive and healthy after being kicked of the wagon. The idea to start a fire to keep the bugs away was a good idea. I just wonder how Mattie could start a fire by herself if she had no idea how and grandpa was sleeping how could she do it. The idea of starting a trap is a good idea also. But, Mattie tried to make a trap and she failed on that thought. So, how could she have done it. Also, they were very far away from the coffee house and with grandpa being sick and sleeping the entire time how could she have done that. Also, wouldn't you worry where your mother was. If they had a not form the Luddingtons they could have had a better chance of getting through because no one wants to stay with sick people. Also, how could Mattie build a shelter with grandpa being no help how could she have cut down trees and built a shelter as a single girl with no experience and no help with those sort of things. Also, how could Mattie and grandpa and sent a letter to Eliza if they had nothing. I mean would they make there own paper and ink and wrote a letter. Also, how could they have mailed the letter if their was no post office near them. So, that is my take on your ideas of getting back to the coffee house.

If I was Mattie I would go back look for a place were grandpa can rest then I would look for water and food. When I found some water and food I would bring some to grandpa and then we could bring him there and if he got to tired I would drag him there and when I get to tired I would rest right where I am. When I wake up I would try to wake him up but if he doesn't get up I would drag him and try to get him there. If he gets up he can start walking. When we get there we can drink some water and berries. After a few hours we can bring as much food and water as we can. So there is a lower chance of as getting bit by mosquitoes in the day light.
