    • 500 BCE old polytheistic religon wasn't used much except for public ceremonies
    • cult religons began to develop ( worship of goddess Isis
    • philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle used reason to develop philosophies that spread.

    Trade

    • Athenian army cleared pirates out of the Aegean- allowed increase in trade
    • Athenians closely controlled trade so it benifted themselves

    Decline/Fall

    • Athens and Sparta were allies - but later turned against eachother
    • Athenians increase in wealth and power worried Spartans
    • 460 BCE First Pelopnnesian War broke out
    • 445 BCE - peace treaty signed
    • 431 BCE- fighting resumed
    • 404 BCE - Spartans
    • Council of Thirty replaced Athenian democracy - oligarchy loyal to Sparta

    Admin.-similar methods Persians had
    -states, provinces, distinct villages
    -important ruled portions, king ruled over the important people
    -Pataliputa, the capital, once was largest city in world w/ 300,000 people

    Religion- for awhile Buddhism was main (similar Hinduism without sacrifices)
    -had nirvona, multiple lives until perfection is reached
    -people acted kind to reach perfection

    Trade- linked kingdoms from Indo Mediterranean to Eastern Asia
    -Had shade trees, wells, and rest houses for traveling merchants
    -Foriegn traders that died while trading were sent back home to be buried

    Decline- 232 BCE lost great leader, Ashokra
    184 BCE completely gone

    divine origon for apollo's son- has a birthmark of an anchor-apollo's symbol
    seleucid did not try to impose any religion
    most believe in polytheistic religions
    trade-
    treaty with chandragupta- connects India with Mediterranean
    common language for travelers- lingua franca
    travelers-merchants,ambassadors,monks,artisans, and adenturers from northern india to seleucid territory
    decl/fall-
    decline started 190 BCE
    Antiochus III crossed the bosporus strait and invaded thrace
    romans defeated antiochus III and pushed back to Anatolian Penn.
    parthians-nomadic seleucid group pushed them westwardborders back
    129 pop. recuded

    Religion
    -alexander was told by his mom that his dad was Apollo
    -so, he went to Egypt and saw Amon (oracle), who told him that he was the son of Amon-Zeus
    -then he became a Pharoh because of heritage
    -thought he was the best (had coins of him on one side and Zeus on the other)
    -people had religions devoted to him
    Trade
    -traveled w/ scientists, doctors, architects, artisans, merchants, surveyors
    -between Hindu-Kush and Indus, surveyors established a trade-route that was used & extended later
    Decline/ Fall
    -over-worked army (gone for 10 years)
    -turned to return home, but Alexander died in Babylon
    -323 BCE (was death from wounds, too much work, mosquitos, too much to drink, and fever)
    -heir of the kingdom was to be the strongest, so caused fights and divided the empire in 3 parts

    Here is the Ptolemaic issa:
    Religion:
    - Ptolemaic were Greek but respected Egyptian gods
    - Cults were made for rulers
    - Others following different religions were not harrassed
    - People were buried by pharoahs

    Trade:
    - Trade expanded
    - Foreign holdings along Mediterranean enriched them with resources
    - Built roads from Nile to ports on the Red Sea
    - Merchants built up trade lines between India and the Mediterranean

    Decline/Fall:
    - Financial issues
    - Cost of war led to peasant uprise
    - Upper Egypt breaks away
    - Lack of concern for population, widespread corruption, civil unrest, disastorous foreign policy and economic collapses all contributed to the fall of this empire
    - No resources to ward of Romans, so Rome takes over

    Sorry I forgot the Admin:
    - Ran Egypt as if it was a private estate
    - Others fought their war
    - Extraction of wealth was their goal, so they taxed everything
    - Expanded land with irrigation and new crops
    - Alexandria is the heart of Ptolemic administration
    - Created 1st think tank, where great ideas emerged
