1. In 1867, the Niagara Movement held its second conference in Harper's Ferry. This was an African American movement lead by Dr. W.E.B Du Bois and other African American leaders.
2. John Brown and several followers seized the United States Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859.
3. John Brown and his followers tried to start a slave revolt by taking the United States Arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. He planned to give the guns to all the slaves, but his attempt was ended by a group of the U.S. Marines.
4. For many years, Harpers Ferry served as an important arsenal and gun production city especially during the civil war. By 1810, it's average gun production per year was at 10,000.
5. The first victim of the Harper's Ferry raid was an African-American who was a railroad baggage handler.
6. Robert Harper made a ferry at the crossing of two rivers giving the town its name in 1747.
