    Mount Vernon's name used to be Little Hunting Creek foundation, but when the plantation was given to washington's younger brother, George's older half brother renamed it Mount Vernon in honor of Vice Admiral Edward Vernon

    George Washington's house was a two-story Georgian mansion is built of wood, but the siding is made of wide, thick boards paneled to give the appearance of cut and dressed stonework and is also over looking the Potomac River and is located on Mount Vernon.

    Mount Vernon was the home of George Washington from 1747 until his death in 1799. The land was patented in 1674, and the house was built in 1743 by Lawrence Washington, George Washington's half brother.

    There is a slave memorial on the estate that was made to honor the slaves that worked on the property. The land was used as a cemetery for slaves and free blacks who worked for the Washington family during the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century.

    When George Washington was alive, he and his wife shared the master bedroom, but when he died his wife closed the master bedroom and chose to sleep in a room close to her grandson instead.
