For years after Lincoln was killed, the theater was used for a number of different purposes including as a warehouse and an office building.

The Petersen House and Ford's theatre are preserved together as Ford's Theatre National Historic Site, and are located at 511 10th Street, NW in D.C.

In 1849, William A. Petersen, a German tailor, constructed the plain red brick three-story townhouse (Peterson House) across the street from Ford’s Theatre. After the shooting President Lincoln was carried to the house and tended in a back bedroom until his death hours later.

April 14, 1865, President Lincoln went to Fords Theater with his wife, Mary Lincoln, Clara Harris, and Major Henry Rathbone. Originally, Ulysses Grant was supposed to come, but he was not able to attend. The production they went to see was called "Our American Cousin."

The National Park Service acquired the theatre in 1933, and the entire interior was reconstructed in the 1960s to recreate its historic appearance on the night of the assassination.

After the government purchased Ford's Theatre, it was turned into an office. Even as an office building the theatre still had death; in 1893 some of the interior floors colapsed levaing twenty-two people who worked in the office dead.
