The Iwo Jima Memorial was dedicated to President D. Eisenhower on the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps. President Eisenhower was a five star general in the U.S. Army and during World War II he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.

The battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest in the war, with more than 6,800 American and 23,000 Japanese deaths. Of the six soldiers that raised the American flag showing America captured the hill only three survived the war. The other three were killed during further battle at Iwo Jima.
