1. The designers of the memorial created it to be accessible to those with various physical impairments, since FDR himself was disabled (from polio).

The National Organization on Diability raised 1.65 million over a two year period for another statue that showed the president in a wheelchair.

The FDR Memorial also contains braille among various statues, but is placed too high where even a very tall person wouldn't be able to read it.

Inside each of the four "rooms" of the FDR Memorial is a series of waterfalls that increase in complexity; the idea of the waterfalls was to show that through each of his terms his presidency became much more complex.

The FDR Memorial is the second in Washington DC. The first was built according to Roosevelt's wishes; he asked for a marble block no larger than his desk. The stone was placed on the Northwest grounds of the National Archives Building facing the US Navy Memorial.

In August 1955, ten years after Franklin D. Roosevelt's death, Congress established a commission to create a memorial to him, the 32nd U.S. president. Four years later, a location for the memorial was found. The memorial was made half way between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, along the Tidal Basin.
