I think one of the authors purposes was to demonstrate the widespread damage caused to everyone throughout Japan. It seems kind of mythical to us being so far away, but this book is a first hand account of what happened. You see how much pain and suffering actually occured.

I thought using all the grotesque descriptions really gave the book the power and toughness that it would otherwise lack. It made the book more raw, powerful, and effective to the reader. Some of the descriptions I will never forget. It made me realize how devestating the bombs were and how so many innocent people were brutally effected

What I will always remember from the book Hiroshima is how much of a effect the bombs had on the citizens of Japan and generations after them. I never realized how terrible it was and the book made it personal. Following innocent people around their lives and the extreme hardships they faced because of the bomb is something that I will never forget.

i think what this book was able to get across in such a powerful manner, is the humanistic side of Hiroshima. Students, like us, learn about Hiroshima in history class and we learn the dates, the numbers, the reasons behind the atomic bomb, but we never learn about how the people were really impacted, from a personal, emotional and sensitive aspect. The way John Hersey describes, with the upmost detail the bruises, and the things that people were saying right during the attack, made my view of Hiroshima a lot more complete. Melanie

also, another thing that really stuck with me while reading the book, were the many hard decisions, the people who were not injured, had to make. Many of them did help the injured, but in some cases they could not because they were looking for their own family members. I tried to picture myself in those situations, and i immediately began to feel remorse. In that kind of situation, what is the RIGHT thing to do? is it different from, what is the MORAL thing to do? do you help the ones who are injured? or do you become a rock and calculate the chance that person has to live and base your judgement on that? ...meaning you only help the ones who are not heavily injured?
and mary, i definitely agree with your comment: "I thought using all the grotesque descriptions really gave the book the power and toughness that it would otherwise lack"

I agree Melanie. Many people had to make sacrifices on their own part to help strangers. It was a very powerful book that really showed the character of many Japanese civilians. I think this book was written for people who thought the bomb was the right tactic to use on Japan. It puts it into a new perspective, when you see how many innocent people were effected and killed. I once thought the bomb was the right thing to do, and after reading Hiroshima, I question it.

adding to your comment:"I once thought the bomb was the right thing to do, and after reading Hiroshima, I question it." I agree, it was not the right thing to do....especially when they dropped a second one. I am still trying to find the reason behind the second attack. One bomb would have been enough. But after reading the book, another thought kept wandering in my mind, is not just the immidiate suffering that the people went through, but also the aftermath. The radiation, the deaths that people had to coap with, losing all your possetions....basically, starting all over. I don't know how many people, countries could have done what Japan did. Starting again, creating homes again, schools, hospitals and an economy...i really don't know how many countries could have done that. Melanie

Another thing that I found interesting was the way it was written. Normally, books written about Hiroshima seem to be all facts but no story behind. Or, they fall on the opposite spectrum; they only portray a single perspective, written in a story-telling format. This book incorporates both. It tells the facts of Hiroshima, while still keeping the reader interested in the actually stories behind each and every character. However, the best aspect of this book, is, “Chapter 5: The Aftermath.” As a reader, I find myself, sometimes wandering, what happened to the characters of the story, and in this book I was not left hanging. While reading the stories, I was happy to hear that somehow, all the people managed to push forward and improve the situation after the bomb drop. One thing that I did notice in the last chapter is that there is less "to the point attitude," but there is more of a narrative style. It seems like he was taking his time to write this chapter, whereas the other chapters, it seemed like he was trying to record it, as if it was live. As if he was present when all of these stories happened and wanted the reader to experience the fast-paste occurrences. Melanie
