i thought in the beginning of the book the stories were really random, but then towards the end they all kinda fit together...like all the ones about his boyfriend...i forgot his name already lol. i really wasnt expecting him to talk about some of the things that he did. i loved the book though it was really funny

I really like reading the twelve stages of an artists story, although his whole meth addiction did tripped me up a bit. It was funny I found myself feeling like he was actually talking to me and that I was interviewing him or something. I really enjoyed his writing.

yeah i thought the twelve stages of an artists story was really funny, it was just weird how he was talking about using garbage and random things like toe nails for art.

I thought that the book was really funny too, but I think that the humor relayed an important message throughout the book. For example, when he was talking about living abroad in France, I really liked that because it reminded me of the French trip! When he was learning "French" words he was choosing the most random words to learn, words that would not have even been used in everyday life. When I get my book I will write some of those up there but I can't find a book!

haha yeah i thought those words were really funny too, i thought the story about the american guy dissin on him was really funny, but i would never have been able to keep my mouth closed.

I have to say one of my favs is the story about him finding a huge turd in the bathroom. What made me laugh the most is is a tie between the poop story and the moment when he is listing to the walkman and it has the various doctor/body part translations.

to danielle OMG i agree that is probably my 2nd fav. I was a little disapointed when he didnt say something to him as he was leaving the train.

he made me laugh when he told the story of the cat with leukemia and when he and his sister sent their mother letters detailing a 'miraculous new cure for leukemia' right after their mother euthanized her favorite cat. On the other hand, he was really odd in the artist story. It was really odd when he went 'vacuumed' his floor with his nose and a straw because he was out of drugs. It seems like each story was just one big tangent from sentence to sentence, but he always managed to keep some sort of theme going like drugs in the artist story or animals in the Youth of Asia story.

I agree with Steph and Audrey. My favorite two stories were the one solely devoted to descussing a giant poop and the one about the man on the subway who thought Sedaris was a pickpocketer. The poop one was just so random, I never expected a complete story to be about a turd! And when I read the French one, I thought of Stephanie there and it made me laugh! Basically I just enjoyed his style of writing; laid-back and about anything!

yeah Lisa! the pocket picker was so funny! I really liked the part because in France everyday they said dont forget to check your purse and pockets and so when they told this story I was dying of laughter! Because in France Lil Bit got her credit card stolen! anyways! some of those funny words were "exorcism, facial swelling, death penalty, slaughterhouse, sea monster, witch doctor. By the end of the month, I'd managed to retain three hundred nouns, none of which proved to be the least bit useful." pg. 163. Who was your guys favorite character outside of the narrator, and why?

omg i completely forgot about the poop story!! that was hillarious, and i thought it was soo funny how he wrote a whole story on what to do about some one else's poop.
i also agree with jacob on the whole tangent thing. even though he seen to just keep talking and talking i was always entertained and i wanted to keep reading.
the words that he randomly chose to learn were really funny and there would probably be no time in his life when he would ever use those words, but after reading the rest of his stories that really seams likes something he would do.....
another story that i really liked was when he was talking about his dad hiding food and eating the rotten moldy food. it was really gross but kinda funny at the same time because all of his siblings were used to his dads weird habbits but everyone else found it really weird.

The funny thing about his tangents is that while they were completely random there were times where he referred back to them subtly at the end of the story.
I liked the Pick Pocketoni story too Steph, but for the reason that made David enjoy the situation. In France I thought it was fun to listen to American tourists say some of the most ridiculous things, all the while they assumed no one understood them. It was really funny some of the stuff that I heard and realized how obnoxious American tourists can be in other countries. I thought that was what he was trying to get at- that as Americans we can't say stupid and obnoxious things in other countries because many people nowadays can tell what we are saying and so we sound like complete idiots.

to steph my fav character besides sedaris is the crazy sister that bought the fat suit. i would do anything to meet her. She was so bold and creative. i think in sedaris's other books she reads a couple stories.

Oh you mean Amy, Audrey. Yeah she's hilarious. It's funny to read about the crazy stuff she did and to watch in shows like "Strangers with Candy." I guess because she is so random, according to David, in real life she would be good in comedies.

The other person I found funny was his brother "The Rooster." He was so random and crazy and by all means should have been the black sheep of the family, yet he was his dad's favorite. But it's funny how that works, opposites attract.

to audrey, haha yeah i loved the fat suit thing, i thought it was even funnier that she only had half of it so she was fat on the bottom and skinny on the top

Sep 12, 2008
i completely agree with you, danielle and audrey, the fat suit was absolutely hilarious. i never could have done that for so long. I was surprised that she actually told the father right before she left - if I had successfully done if for that long, I wouldn't have caved at the last second, I would have come back the next time without the fat suit...
or would I get one of those sumo wrestler suits and make it look real... :p

Omg! Laffy, that actually happened with me! haha I felt really bad too. For example, we would say something like "why does that school group have to wear those stupid backpacks", and they were from Canada, so they understood us completely. The fat suit story oh man I totally have to agree with you guys on that, Audrey I really liked Amy too, she was definitely one of my favorite characters!! Does anyone remember the part when he has to take music lessons, and his teacher is really short and he tries to not say words that are similar to small, short, tiny etc? haha! I loved that part!!!.Also, what character do you guys think you are the most similar too, and why?

Sep 14, 2008
Oh the music teacher... I keep imagining him as like half my height :P That reminds me of the speech teacher in the first story - i liked how she made the whole story thing up during the two person 'party' just so that he would say, "Sorry". That made me laugh

Hahah oh yeah I forgot about the speech teacher! I love this quote from it "My sisters Amy and Gretchen were, at the time, undergoing therapy fo their lazy eyes, while my older sister, Lisa, had been born with a lazy leg that refused to grow at the same rate as its twin. She'd worn a corrective brace for the first two years of her life, and whenever she roamed she left a trail of scratch marks in the soft pine floor." this is funny cause she had to wear a corrective brace for her leg, like I do for my back. No one answered my question, what character do you guys think you are the most similar too, and why?

hmm i dont think im like any of the caracters. steph who do u think u r like?
kreagerstephanie
Sep 14, 2008
Well I think that I am similar to Valencia. She was the one who was really concerned about her busines. I think that I am like her because sometimes I do not think things through. She cared so much about little things for example she wanted him to make a long distance call, because they owed her money. But it would cost more to call them, then the actual amount that they owed her. Sometimes I do things like that, for example I might go skate and workout but after ill go eat an ice cream Sunday. hahha sometimes I just do not make sence. Im not sure if that is similar, but thats something I just thought of right now. hahha.

i definitely don't think I am anything like any of these characters. The closest I could be would be in the lisp story - the speech therapist. I believe if I was in that position, I would do something very similar, if not more ingenious. Other than that, I am nothing like any of the other characters - especially david... I don't think I could ever 'vacuum' the floor with my nose and a straw...

Audrey, you should probably practice proper English. It is the English website.
Any who, Sedaris is a pretty funny guy, except some of his jokes didnt relate back to the bigger picture of the story. For example, alot of the beginning stories, especially the airplane one.

I like how off the bat he lets you know he was a complete outcast. and I also like when said, "you could turn up your nose at the president or Coke or even God, but there were names for boys who didn't like sports. When the subject came up, I found it best to ask which team my questioner preferred. Then I'd say, "Really? Me, too!""
- THIS IS SO TRUE! Correct me if I am wrong, but a lot of people in today's society think of boys as less masculine if they don't play sports
-Also-
When he talks about people doing things the hard way to avoid consequences is completely true... sometimes it's worth doing things the hard way because it's worth it when you realize how bad the consequence could have been.
